When BP signed a technical service contract with the Iraqi government in November 2009 to develop the Rumaila oilfield, the company embarked on a project with considerable scale and challenge. Rumaila holds reserves of some 17 billion barrels, and is already the fourth largest oilfield in the world, currently producing around 1 million barrels per day under the operatorship of Iraq’s South Oil Company (SOC).
